During my childhood, I spent my
summers in the lush green hollows of
Kentucky and the school year in the
urban despair of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
To my mind there was very little
difference between these two
places. Both were inhabited by
people who loved to tell stories.
My
grandmother and her family wove
colorful stories about the clan,
interrupting one another or
themselves with asides and
observations about certain
characters; my Ayah in Dhaka spun
linear
epic tales that were whispered at
bedtime. I believe this is why I
have come to make art that is
narrative. |
The story of creation
could have been told by both my
grandmother and my Ayah. It is
full of characters, motivations,
emotions, and complications-both
humorous and deadly serious. t
is an epic that is etched in our
collective memory. Like the stories
my grandmother and my Ayah
told, this story is worth repeating
with new words and fresh
perspectives, as there are still
lessons
for all of us. |
