Statement
James
H. Stewart,
a psychologist, university professor, and
artist has allowed his psychological training to
serve as inspiration for his art. He
is an insightful artist, painting with strokes
that take the eye beyond the obvious to the
expanded imagination. Stewart began painting in
his teens, first with pastels while in elementary
school during the 1950's. He received training
from Daniel E. Greene, one of America's leading
portrait painters and one of the foremost pastel
artists in the United States. Stewart's first oil
painting was produced while serving in the U.S.
Army during the late 1960's. He has also been
influenced by other notable artists such as Nina
Lovelace, Michael McBride, Ted Jones, Greg Ridley,
and Shirley Pharris, an accomplished student of
Daniel E. Greene. His paintings depict "old
home scenes" from his childhood and his
dreams. Stewart lives and paints in the serenity
of his baby farm near Nashville, Tennessee.
