Jonathan Kupersmith | Oil Painting

Statement

When I was a young boy, instead of playing with GI Joes, I would draw my favorite TV heroes on cardboard, cut them out, and use them as my toys. Now, some 35 years later, I'm still fascinated with the lines and contours of the face. Every time I start a new caricature, I feel the possibilities are endless. Unlike straight portrait work, the art of caricature allows me to manipulate and twist features however I choose, as long as the likeness of my subject matter remains accurate. I've been asked if I'll ever move past caricature into the "fine arts". I don't know what the future holds, but for now, I see limitless possibilities in what I'm doing. If we happen to be talking one day, and I'm staring at you with my head to one side, don't be offended. I'm just examining your features in case you should be my next subject.

Biography

Born in northern Virginia in 1962, Jonathan showed promise in art as well as music, during his childhood. At the age of 16, he decided to pursue music seriously and in 1980, enrolled at Catholic University as a piano major. In 1983, he dropped out of school when he was offered a job touring the country portraying Keith Richards in a rolling stones tribute band. In 1987, he was signed to a one record deal with a well known record producer and spent the summer in Manhattan recording his second record. In 1990, he took a part time job at an art gallery, and for the last ten years, his focus has returned to art. Today, Jonathan uses his musical gifts at his church, where he plays in a contemporary Christian band. He hopes one day to be a caricature artist for a local newspaper. Meanwhile, the commissions for his caricatures keep him busy and fulfilled artistically.
