Kathy McMillan, who graduated from Tennessee State University in 1980, was a silver medalist in the long jump competition at the Montreal Olympics in 1976 with a leap of 21 feet, ten and one-fourth inches. As a student at TSU, she finished second in the AAU competitions in 1977 and 1978. Besides winning the gold medal in the1979 Pan American Games in the long jump, winning her eighth Pan Am medal, she placed second in the Olympic trials in 1980 but could not compete, due to the U.S. boycott.
